Oodles are a collectable currency which is won by answering trivia, and they add up pretty quickly. New trivia questions are available daily. The questions are multiple choice, with four answer options.

There are 3 different types of trivia on the GSN site:

     1. Play Along with Game Shows      Those questions are only available 12-6 EST weekdays & 8-11 EST on Saturday nights, and are usually worth around 50 points each.

      2. The Question of the Day    A single question, meant to be challenging. This one nets nice points, around 50.

     3. “Oodles Challenge” questions    These are my favorite way to earn. If you go under the “ways to win” in the Oodles tab on the GSN site, there is a list of 39 games (10 points each). When you click on the link to each game, there is an Oodles challenge bar at the top of the page. Click it, for a trivia question.

I have only been using the GSN site for a short while ( program launched June 4, 2009), but at my current earnings rate, I should be ready to cash-in for an Amazon gift card very soon. Oodles add up quickly each day,and the rewards redemptions are very reasonable.

1700 = $10 gift card

7500 = $50 gift card

Larger prizes are also available, like flat screen TVs.

Ipsos Survey Panel: Review

I got a check in today, from Ipsos Survey Panel, so I thought I would do a quick review on them.

Ipsos is a paid survey site. They send surveys out to members on a regular basis, for most of Ipsos’s surveys, members are rewarded with points, which are in turn redeemable for gift cards and merchandise. This survey company also runs special paid surveys, and auxiliary sites. These are often well paying, especially for the time spent. They contact members, who meet the criteria for select projects. These are often paid as checks.

All in all, I would say Ipsos is worth signing up for. Although, with regular surveys it may take awhile to reach redemption level, occasional special opportunities , make it worthwhile.

I just wanted to give a quick heads up, to anyone interested in writing for income. Helium currently has a “contest” going on for Real Estate articles. The promo has been extended, since they did not get enough submissions for all titles. 34 titles have been extended. The top article for each title earns $200, submissions ranking 2-26 will be paid $10 each, and 27-50 will receive $5. The extension end on Wednesday. Currently, the titles have 10-26 submissions each (after about a week), so any articles meeting the minimum criteria for submission , should get paid something.

The requested articles are broken into regions and 2 topics: buying foreclosures in your area, and tips for current first time home buyers. the articles should be 500 words, with proper spelling and grammar, and include requested keywords.

Building a Website on a Shoestring: Starting off with a Free Blog

If you are contemplating, creating your own blog or website, to generate some income, I suggest starting a free Blogger blog on Blogspot (part of the Goggle network), right away. Although optimum earnings potential comes from a well designed, website or Wordpress powered blog, with it’s own carefully selected domain name and niche topic. All those things take some time to put together.

Starting off with a free blog, with no hosting costs, is a great way to test the waters. Using Blogger, it is extremely easy to set up a blog, and is completely free through Blogspot. You can have your blog up and ready to begin posting on, in just a few minutes.

Utilize this free blog, to get used to writing on a regular basis, and sign-up for adsense and affiliate networks, while planning your primary blog/website. Blogspot is one of the very few free hosts that don’t run ads on your blog, and allow you to place your own. Since it is part of the Google network, they have made adding adsense ads, very simple on standard blogspot templates. By pre-applying for ad networks, you won’t have the added hassle of applying and waiting for approvals for advertising, to monetize your new site, while you are working on getting it  launched, and trying to generate traffic.

If the free blog you created covers a topic related to what your new site/blog is about, you will be able to use it to help promote the new primary site, and give it a little instant authority. You could alternately, move your content over to the new site and post an “I’ve moved to xyz.com” link. This option will give you instant content on your new site, but is likely to mess you up, with the search engines for a little while, as they will see this as duplicate content, and ignore it at first. I would suggest, putting a few quick rewrites of your best posts from your old blogspot blog, on you new site, and leaving the old one up and running. This way you get the best of both worlds, so to speak. Why throw away free advertising, after all.

Even if the topic of your free blog is completely non-related, to your new site/blog, placing a link to the new site on your blogroll is probably a good idea. It may help search engines find the new website faster and is generally good SEO (search engine optimization).

There is really nothing to lose, in setting up a blogspot blog. Yet it is not an ideal long term set-up, if you want to generate income. It is pretty much limited to basic blogging, and even Google engineers have been known to recommend Wordpress as a blogging platform over Blogger(Blogspot). Wordpress is far more search engine friendly, and can be almost endlessly customized, with all the themes and plugins, which are widely available (many for free).

Blogger/Blogspot is very poorly suited for selling, and having a “.blogspot.com” web address, rather than a top tier domain name, does not make your site look particularly authoritative. Although domains can be registered by anyone, quite cheaply, they still give a site, a sense of stability and legitimacy.

I would opt to limit use of free blogs to getting your feet wet, perhaps dabbling in a new niche area, promoting primary sites and for hobby sites meant for fun. Blogspot can be a useful tool, as long as, you understand it’s limitations.

I did put some effort into Spells for Love, and it’s a fun site I plan on maintaining. The Money and Gift Cards site took me about 45 minutes total (including posts). Starting a Website on a Shoestring : Introduction

Starting a new website without spending any money, can seem a daunting task to many. In the last few years, it has become increasingly less difficult to get a site started with little or no money.

In addition to my usual posts, I will be running this new series of articles, for those wishing to start their own sites. The general goal is: an active sight, with it’s own domain, a good host & to achieve this with out using any household money.

In the beginning

I started out in early October of 2008, with the goal of having a frugal Christmas site, up by the end of that month. I knew almost nothing about building a site, blogging, how ads worked, SEO, CMS, etc…you get the idea. I was nearly a blank canvas. I decided to jump right in with both feet. I opted to go with buying my own domain and hosting, since I knew I would end out learning more and faster that way.

A Christmas related site appealed to me, because I figured no matter how much I messed up, the season would be over in 2 months, and I would have plenty of time to change things before next season came around. By then, I would know a lot more. While I do plan on continuing the site next season, and it will need a complete overhaul, it was a bit disheartening, to start over from scratch, after the holidays ended. One benefit of starting off with PoorSanta.com, came in seeing the popularity of the “Making Money” page. SEO (search engine optimization), wasn’t done very well, at all, so it didn’t get traffic from search engines, but was a popular choice from the homepage. HowtoMakeMoneyontheInternet.info was born of that page.

My first domain

I shopped around, Godaddy was among the least expensive domain registrars, that did not require you to sign up for hosting, and I felt comfortable with them. I found an available domain I liked & snagged it. I didn’t check any stats for it . It just seemed right.

Picking a Host

When it came to hosting, I narrowed my choices to those that accepted monthly payments. I had no desire to prepay for a year or more of hosting, what if I hated doing this. I also knew the monthly fees would be easier to cover with Paypal deposits earned through surveys, Gather and Ebay, than a yearly lump sum. I was determined to use no household finances in this endeavor. I ended out selecting HostGator. They were well rated, by other users, could be paid monthly, I could host other sites with them in the future with an easy up grade, and I got the first month for nearly free. They also had a template included with their site builder software, that I wanted to use. This software has recently been upgraded and is much better than when I used it for Poorsanta.

I did try out Godaddy hosting for another site. I must say they are very prompt to help, when you phone them. I would give an A+ for customer service, but I’d become accustomed to the ease of Hostgator’s Cpanel style, and found manuevering in Godaddy’s hosting to be clumsy and slow. I played around with the Website Tonight Builder at Godaddy though, and I like that. It was far easier to customize than the one at Hostgator. If your only planning one site and need an easy way to build it (without knowing any code), it is a nice deal, at just $4.99/month.
